From its origins in the urban streets of the 1970s to where it is now graffiti has developed from a form of expression for street kids to a globally recognized art movement. It's no wonder more and more people are looking to learn to graffiti.
You're probably reading this article because you want to become the next Banksy, Shepard Fairey or even possibly Taki 183? But to many people, graffiti is about much more than finding fame and glory. Whether you want to learn to graffiti to attain fame or to solidify your name in the streets, the main principles of graffiti writing still apply.
Graffiti starts out with tagging. When graffiti was first recognized it was in the form of street kids literally writing their names on the walls wherever they went. Since then the name of the graffiti writer has formed the basis for all of graffiti bombing, throwups and pieces.
You need to select a name that you will use to be recognized by others. If you want to change your tag name later down the line to reinvent yourself you can do that too, You're not necessarily stuck with your tag name, but you still need to make sure you choose one that you will want to use and that is also unique.
All graffiti writers and artists are expected to have their own style. You won't stand any chance of making it in your pursuit to learn to graffiti if you aren't able to develop your own style. Your style should be as distinctive as your tag, and be aware that other graffiti writers are extremely protective of their own styles. Any kind of copying will not be tolerated.
When you're starting to learn to graffiti it is all right to learn by copying other writers style. But you need to use copying as a way to develop your own graffiti writing skills, not to create your own pieces. It is easier to learn to graffiti by copying a number of different graffiti artist's styles. This way you will find what parts of different styles you're better at and which parts you enjoy working with more. What you learn from other graffiti writers styles you can use to develop your own.
Once you have developed your own tag and graffiti style, you are ready to start creating your own pieces (short for masterpieces). It is important that each graffiti piece you put up is distinctive in your unique style and skill. While you learn to graffiti you need to focus on developing your skills with paint, markers, spray cans and other materials.
Because skill is just as important as style you need to work on your pieces until they're perfect. This is why graffiti writers have black books. They're used for sketches, copying down ideas and developing their pieces before they're actually thrown up. You need to make sure every detail is planned out in case you find yourself working in a time pressured situation. Every piece you put up is representative of you as a graffiti writer.
Graffiti has been a problem in many cities for years now. It is complex form of art done by a group of artist to protest or display their art. Generally done by hip-hop gangs or protestants on the walls of bridges, streets and buildings illegally. They use spraying cans with permanent ink to do the same. Graffiti is a combination of words, numbers and drawings. You may commonly find them in cities like Manchester and London.
As these graffiti artists use permanent paints it becomes all the more difficult to remove. It is advisable to re move the graffiti very next day if possible as it won't have penetrated the surface much making it graffiti cleaning easy. Most paint used to paint furniture has billions for long lasting effect of paint making it tough ones to remove if used for graffiti.
Graffiti cleaners come in picture now. There are many companies in market these days which either offer graffiti cleaning products or products and services together. Some companies like Star Ads Graffiti Removers are the one of the established one in the business from last 20 years. They deal with graffiti cleaning for commercial clients, business, councils and residential clients as well. The products they use for graffiti cleaning are environmentally friendly and deal with wide range of surfaces. Most of the graffiti cleaning products remove the paint damaging the surface of the wall or the product. The chemicals used in these cleaners are dangerous and may cause skin irritation or burn. Therefore it's better to get graffiti cleaning done by professional cleaners using environmental friendly products.
Graffiti cleaners are of various types. They are broadly categorised based on the surface and effect needed by the client. As each surface has different properties so the cleaners are also different. There are citrus based solvents or graffiti cleaner and potassium hydroxide based graffiti cleaners. The least aggressive ones are citrus based but they sometimes don't work on certain paints. They don't require strict disposal and are safe to use. Potassium hydroxide graffiti cleaner are effective but are strong in nature they require soaking of the surface for hours before washing. They also need an acid neutralizer. The most effective and strongest is tungsten carbide nozzle graffiti cleaner that combines sand and water and can only be done by professional graffiti cleaner.
Many buildings and societies have started using anti graffiti cleaners on the surface of their walls. Anti graffiti cleaners are different types and offer different kind of protection. They are three types basically sacrificial anti graffiti, semi permanent and permanent.
In sacrificial coating Graffiti cleaner is based on the usage of anti graffiti wax which is very reasonable. Once a layer of wax is applied on the surface the graffiti can be removed by melting the wax. The wax can be melted by using a stream of hot water. However sacrificial coating Graffiti cleaner be used only once.
Graffiti is the illegal spraying of paint, dye, permanent inks or other substances to mark buildings, fences and surfaces open to the public. It is a community problem that drives down business revenue, lowers property values and promotes a view that it is an unsafe community.
Remove graffiti as soon as possible. Graffiti vandals move to another location once their "art" isn't displayed any longer. Graffiti is easier to remove in the first 24 hours as it hasn't been exposed to the elements for too long and hasn't had much of a chance to penetrate into the surface.
Apply a sacrificial or non-sacrificial anti-graffiti coating to the surface. An anti-graffiti coating is a transparent layer that can be applied to porous materials such as brick, limestone, concrete, etc. as well as metal. The layer of coating keeps the graffiti at the surface, not letting it penetrate into the porous surface which makes the removal of the graffiti much easier. You should choose the best coating that suits your particular situation. They are explained as follows
Anti Graffiti Protective Coating can be applied to any surface that vandals want to graffiti. It comes in a matt or gloss finish and can be painted, rolled or sprayed onto a surface. The coating can be clear or tinted to your required colour.
When you get graffiti on a surface that has Anti Graffiti Coating applied, it can be removed with ease by either yourself by applying warm soapy water or a mild graffiti remover, agitating the graffiti, then hosing off with water or calling in your local graffiti professional.
Sacrificial Anti-Graffiti Protective CoatingSacrificial Anti Graffiti Coatings are great for all types of surfaces. The Sacrificial Anti Graffiti Coating is easy to apply by painting, rolling or spraying. When you have been vandalized with graffiti, it is a matter of applying hot soapy water to the area that has graffiti.
The difference between sacrificial and non-sacrificial anti graffiti coatings is that sacrificial is removed with hot water only and no products are required. The sacrificial coating then needs to be re-applied.
Both coatings can be applied over painted surfaces or non-painted surfaces depending on your requirements. It can be applied to most surfaces such as brick, concrete, metal, perspex, road signs, wood, etc.
I am a Nevada State Licensed Contractor, I have been a contractor going on 29 years. We are all alarmed at the recent statistic shared by the California Realtors Board. Graffiti can negate your homes property value by up to 20%. If we try to get involved and confront the taggers we run the very high probability of getting shot. Two workers have been killed while removing graffiti and two women in different cities were killed when they just confronted the taggers. (I have attached the News clipping below!) I specialize in deciphering graffiti and identifying the gangs related to the markings. Graffiti is being used to sell products. If you look closely you might see My space names, Websites and even phone numbers. All are being tagged with the intent of selling everything from drugs to AK47's.
I have been working with DOTs, DOE, Chambers of Commerce, and Gang Task Forces trying to help educate our many cities about graffiti and its vast effects. Here in the USA are spending over 40 Billion on graffiti and related issues.
2 This has caused all Public Works to feel financial pressure to paint over as much graffiti as possible a day. Matching colors is close to impossible with the factors of weather, oxidation, and UV degradation to compete with. The result of painting over the graffiti is now homes, buildings, and sound walls have a new problem. The graffiti is now hidden by a quilt of colors, all varying in sizes and shapes. Everyone knows the new paint is hiding gang related symbols; the public still show signs of concern and fear in these areas. The vandalism is hidden but the new "Ghetto Quilt Effect" influences the price of properties and strain on businesses. The current paint over solution is in sharing failing. Gangs are using our walls to advertise sales of their products. I am not alone sharing this information; Timothy Kephart analyzed 450 tags and wrote his Master's Thesis on this very subject.
3 Graffiti has been around a while, originally used to rebuke those in power. Gangs are in essence still rebuking the government, they freely use our highways, buildings and city walls to advertise the goods they are selling. Profits are gathered and in some gang structures those serving time distribute the profit. The "Ghetto Quilt Effect" is affecting all of us in one form or another. There is up to an 80% your customers will not return if graffiti is on your building. Preventative measures need to be taken as soon as you see the first patch. The only proven tactic is the application of anti graffiti coatings. When will our cities acknowledge the need for a long term strategy of protecting our cities walls and buildings from looking like the South Side of Chicago in the 70's. Anti Graffiti coatings are the only proven deterrent to graffiti. Yes, they cost more than just painting over the graffiti a couple of times. I am against losing 20% of my homes value because the city is ignoring the cost of damages graffiti will be costing in the 10 years.
